Southampton Port Uses Data Analytics to Improve Operations

Vertical: Ports

Application: Drones and data analytics

Ecosystem: Verizon, Nokia

Private Network: 5G

The Southampton port in Great Britain is the port of choice for imported cars sold in the British market. Verizon partnered with Nokia to deploy a private 5G network for Southampton, the largest of the 21 Associated British Ports. WiFi connectivity at Southampton was not able to cope with the traffic at the port. Verizon used the mid-band spectrum to install a 5G network, with fewer access points to process higher bandwidth applications. Data analytics of port operations helped to improve the efficiency of all assets. The first application is that of drones to inspect cranes and have them restart quickly after a storm.
