South Korean Navy Preparing for Private 5G

Navy Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Military

Application: Digital Twin, intelligent security monitoring

Ecosystem:  Samsung, KT

Private Network: 5G

The Republic of Korea Navy is modernizing its operations with a private 5G network deployment. South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics and mobile carrier KT Corporation have been selected to lead the project, the first of its kind at a Korean naval base.

Set for completion by December 2025, the “Smart Naval Port” initiative aims to revolutionize the Navy’s capabilities in battleship and base operations support while enhancing overall base defense. The project centers on implementing an intelligent, independent 5G network infrastructure for the Navy’s 2nd Fleet, designed to meet the demanding requirements of national defense where ultra-fast speeds and hyper-connected communications are crucial.

The project encompasses a comprehensive Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure, integrating 13 different systems ranging from uncrewed vehicle operation to armory and ammunition depot management. Key features include a digital twin of the smart naval base, providing valuable insights for strategic decision-making, and an advanced intelligent security monitoring system to boost defense capabilities.

A one-stop battleship operation management system will streamline critical processes by integrating various essential systems such as navigation support, logistics management, and safety monitoring. This approach is expected to enhance operational efficiency and reduce administrative burdens on Navy personnel.

Samsung will provide its end-to-end private 5G network solution, including the 5G SA Compact Core, radio solutions, and network management software. These solutions support the mid-band spectrum widely used in military applications and are designed for quick deployment and simplified operations.

The collaboration between Samsung and KT brings together their respective strengths in technology and telecommunications. KT will focus on establishing a standardized system, while Samsung’s expertise in private 5G solutions will be crucial in meeting the specific needs of this military application.
