Vertical: Manufacturing
Application: Vehicle assembly inspection, smart factory automation
Ecosystem: Samsung, Qualcomm
Private Network: 5G
Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Company have successfully completed the industry’s first end-to-end Reduced Capability (RedCap) trial over a private 5G network. This milestone achievement builds upon Samsung’s private 5G network deployment at Hyundai’s Ulsan Plant last October, widely recognized as the world’s largest automobile manufacturing facility producing approximately 6,000 vehicles daily.
The companies conducted comprehensive RedCap technology tests at Samsung’s private 5G network testbed within its R&D Center beginning in January. These tests verified RedCap capabilities and performance across the entire network infrastructure, from vehicle inspection terminals to the private 5G core, radios, and management systems.
For this trial, Samsung implemented its RedCap-powered private 5G network solutions, including virtualized 5G Core, baseband units, radios supporting the 4.7 GHz band, and an integrated Network Management System. A key focus was integrating Hyundai Motor’s Diagnostic Scan (D Scan) device, which features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X35 5G Modem-RF System, into the network environment.
The D Scan technology represents a significant advancement in vehicle quality control. It establishes wireless communications between vehicles and the diagnostic system to automatically inspect and determine whether vehicles have been assembled correctly before they leave the production line. Compared to previous Wi-Fi systems, the companies achieved more seamless, real-time inspection data transmission with higher speeds and more reliable connectivity through 5G.
“Hyundai Motor was the first Korean company to implement P-5G in mass production. We are also the industry’s first to verify P-5G RedCap technology, reinforcing our global leadership in smart manufacturing solutions. We will continue to accelerate its commercialization,” said Jae Min Lee, Vice President and Head of E-FOREST Center of Hyundai Motor and Kia.
The collaboration highlights the practical applications of RedCap technology, which streamlines 5G connectivity for small IoT devices such as industrial sensors and wearables by reducing complexity and increasing battery life while maintaining necessary data speeds. At Hyundai’s smart factories, numerous small devices—including sensors, cameras, tablet PCs, automatic logistics robots, and testing equipment—make RedCap on a private 5G network essential for efficient network automation and monitoring.
Simon Lee, Vice President and Head of B2B·B2G Business Development at Samsung Electronics’ Networks Business, noted: “The recent collaboration with Hyundai Motor represents how the two leaders in their respective industries can creatively drive business innovation and unlock new real use cases by merging best-in-class expertise.”
