Vertical: Education
Application: Asset tracking, automated robots/AGVs, real-time process automation
Ecosystem: Kontron, Mugler
Private Network: 5G
The Technical University of Rosenheim (TH Rosenheim) has partnered with Kontron and Mugler SE to implement a private 5G network at its proto_lab research facility, creating an advanced platform for research projects and hands-on student learning experiences.
The network deployment marks the beginning of a four-year collaboration between the university and its technology partners, focusing on testing and validating industrial use cases. The infrastructure will support the integration of AI algorithms and real-time applications at both the network edge and in cloud environments.
Professor Oliver Kramer, head of the proto_lab research and development platform, emphasized how the network will enhance mobility and flexibility in production and logistics environments. “Our 5G campus network provides the optimal foundation for implementing and further developing our R&D projects in the proto_lab,” he noted.
The private network installation showcases the technical capabilities of both vendors. Kontron, formerly known as Iskratel, provided the core network and radio access network (RAN) components, while German systems integrator Mugler SE handled the deployment and integration.
Dr. Markus Dod, Director of Local Networks at Mugler SE, highlighted the practical implications of the project: ” This partnership with Kontron and TH Rosenheim demonstrates how 5G technology, combined with practical integration expertise, can achieve real progress. Our goal is to show how tailored 5G networks can effectively support both industry and academia in advancing connectivity and automation.”
The network will serve TH Rosenheim’s 7,500 students, offering them practical experience with 5G technology while supporting various industrial applications. These include warehouse tracking systems, automated guided vehicles, flexible workspace solutions, and real-time process automation.
