Proximus and AZ Groeninge Hospital Test Private 5G

Hospital Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Healthcare

Application: remote monitoring, remote surgery

Ecosystem:  Proximus NXT

Private Network: 5G

Proximus NXT, the innovation arm of Belgian telecom company Proximus, recently announced a new partnership with AZ Groeninge Hospital in Kortrijk, Belgium. Together, they will pilot the first private 5G network in a Belgian hospital setting.

The goal of the private 5G network is to enable new digital health applications and services that can improve patient care and hospital operations. For example, the high bandwidth and low latency of 5G could allow remote consultation with specialists via HD video, real-time monitoring of patient’s vital signs, and the use of augmented reality during complex surgery.

Proximus and AZ Groeninge Hospital expect the 5G pilot will demonstrate the technology’s benefits for healthcare, with an eye toward wider adoption. However, some privacy and security concerns around 5G healthcare networks remain which they will also evaluate.
