The Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) is a single global standard for railway communications for wireless mobile communications in the 5G era. It will replace the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM-R), sunset [or terminated] by 2030. For passengers, the new standard will make video a key use case as well as content about railway stations. One of the primary use cases is IoT data to track rolling stock and tracks and the predictive maintenance of railway assets. In this interview with Nokia’s Jochen Apel, we learn how the Odakyu Electric Railway in Japan uses Scene Analytics to identify obstacles and potential events to enhance safety at rail crossings. Digitale S-Bahn Hamburg project, an autonomous railway project, is another pathbreaking project under implementation.
