Vertical: Energy
Application: Operational safety and efficiency
Ecosystem: China Telecom, Huawei
Private Network: 5G
China’s Yangjiang Nuclear Power facility has implemented a private 5G network solution, developed in partnership with China Telecom and Huawei, to enhance operational safety and efficiency.
The facility, which generates 53 billion kWh annually and represents 12.3% of China’s nuclear power output, faced challenges in production collaboration, maintenance management, and equipment monitoring. Their digital transformation strategy centered on deploying an integrated 5G network that combines data, voice, messaging, and trunking capabilities.
This custom-designed infrastructure features dedicated base stations and multi-frequency networking, specifically engineered to operate in challenging environments including radiation zones and confined spaces. The network encompasses six generator sets and supports over 10,000 personnel and devices.
The transformation has yielded impressive results. The implementation of 1,700 mobile terminals eliminated manual labeling processes, reducing labor hours by 2,150 and removing 55 coordination positions. AI-powered supervision has identified over 200 operational risks and numerous non-standard equipment instances.
Maintenance efficiency improved significantly, with generator set overhaul periods reduced by two days. The system pioneered real-time radiation dose monitoring for personnel in China, enabling rapid health risk identification. Equipment reliability has also improved, with critical defects dropping by 6.47% and operational incidents decreasing by 13.86%. This implementation sets a new benchmark for intelligent nuclear power operations in China, where nuclear energy currently provides 4.86% of total power generation.
