Vertical: Healthcare
Application: Wearables, improved connectivity
Ecosystem: Boldyn Networks, WIOCAR Technologies
Private Network: 5G
A consortium with Boldyn Networks, Oulu University Hospital, and WICOAR Technologies is establishing the first private 5G network within an operating hospital in Europe. This innovative project, dubbed “Hola 5G Oulu” and funded by the European Commission, aims to create a robust and secure 5G network at Oulu University Hospital in Finland.
The private 5G network will serve as the foundation for research and development of wireless wearable solutions by WICOAR Technologies. These wearables will seamlessly integrate patient data like medical imaging, test results, and vital signs monitoring into the hospital’s systems. This technology promises to transform how doctors and nurses access and interact with patient information.
Some key benefits include:
- Enabling doctors to make faster diagnoses by having all patient data at their fingertips via wearables during appointments
- Reducing time spent in front of computers collecting data
- Increasing quality face-to-face time with patients
- Allowing remote monitoring of surgeries by specialists not physically present
The project brings together expertise across technology providers like Boldyn Networks, a pioneering healthcare wearables startup in WICOAR Technologies, the academic research prowess of the University of Oulu, and the clinical environment of Oulu University Hospital itself.
“We’re bringing our expertise in large, connected venues as well as bespoke private networks to deliver a solution that will undoubtedly be replicated in other hospitals in Finland and globally,” said Petri Parviainen, Senior Key Account Manager at Boldyn Networks.
Rigorous testing and safety protocols will be followed by the University of Oulu to ensure the network and wearable workflow integrations minimize disruptions as they transform patient care practices.
This EU-supported pioneering initiative marks a significant milestone for adopting innovative technologies like 5G and wearables in healthcare settings across Europe. By improving efficiency and doctor-patient interactions, the “Hola 5G Oulu” project demonstrates the tremendous potential for delivering better patient experiences and clinical outcomes.
