Meta Uses CBRS in Office Buildings to Enhance Operator Coverage

Vertical: In-building coverage

Application: Enhanced operator coverage

Ecosystem:  AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Deloitte

Private Network: CBRS

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has implemented a cost-effective Neutral Host in-building wireless network using small cells and the unlicensed 3.5GHz CBRS spectrum band. This deployment involved collaboration with major wireless providers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, enabling seamless roaming for their customers.

Traditionally, distributed antenna systems (DAS) were widely popular for large buildings due to their ability to overcome challenges posed by building construction materials that hindered wireless signal penetration. By strategically distributing antennas throughout the building, DAS networks ensured improved coverage over public networks. Additionally, DAS networks boasted carrier neutrality, enabling multiple wireless carriers to coexist within the same infrastructure. This made them an attractive choice for large buildings with diverse tenants and visitors. Moreover, DAS networks facilitated seamless handovers, allowing users to transition between different areas of the building without experiencing disruptions in their connectivity.

However, Meta opted for a CBRS-based neutral host network (NHM) instead of DAS, primarily due to the high cost and complexity associated with the latter. By leveraging the CBRS spectrum, Meta achieved rapid coverage expansion at a reduced cost. In fact, deploying the CBRS solution was found to be 75% faster and more affordable compared to DAS.

Collaboration with mobile operators was vital to ensure network compatibility, and therefore, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile extensively tested the Meta network. AT&T expressed excitement about this technology and expressed plans to offer it to other enterprise customers, highlighting its potential value.

The utilization of Multiple Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology, which enables multiple mobile network operators (MNOs) to share infrastructure, has been instrumental in reducing costs while delivering top-notch coverage to customers. This collaborative approach allows MNOs to leverage shared resources, optimize network efficiency, and provide consistent and reliable connectivity.

As a result of this implementation, Meta now enjoys consistent coverage in buildings where this technology is deployed. In-building CBRS initiatives, similar to Meta’s deployment, have garnered significant interest, evident from other deployments by companies such as Crown Castle, Dish Network, and the OnGo Alliance. Indoor wireless networks have become essential for building owners, considering reports indicating that approximately 80% of wireless traffic is generated indoors.
