Vertical: Education
Application: Telecommunications research
Ecosystem: IS-Wireless
Private Network: 5G
IS-Wireless, a leading provider of mobile network solutions out of Poland, has successfully installed a private 5G network at the University of York. This deployment marks a significant step forward in bringing next-generation wireless technology to higher education institutions.
The installation incorporates key components of the 5G network architecture, including the Near-Real Time RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller), O-CU (Open Centralized Unit), and O-DU (Open Distributed Unit). These elements are crucial for enabling the advanced features and flexibility of a modern 5G network.
The new private 5G network is expected to enhance research capabilities, improve campus-wide connectivity, and enable innovative applications across various academic disciplines.
“The Private 5G network provided by IS-Wireless will enable us to develop and test new solutions that will enhance Open RAN-based mobile communications worldwide,” said Professor David Grace from the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology at the University of York.
By implementing a private 5G network, the University of York gains more control over its wireless infrastructure, potentially improving security, reliability, and customization options compared to relying solely on public cellular networks.
This installation also highlights the growing trend of private 5G networks in enterprise and institutional settings. As the technology matures, we can expect to see more universities and organizations adopting similar solutions to meet their specific connectivity needs.
