Hrvatski Telekom Brings Private 5G to Rijeka Gateway Terminal

Seaport Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Seaport

Application: Remote-controlled cranes

Ecosystem:  Hrvatski Telekom, Rijeka Gateway

Private Network: 5G

Croatian telecommunications leader Hrvatski Telekom (HT) is set to revolutionize port operations with a state-of-the-art private 5G network at the new Rijeka Gateway container terminal on the Kvarner Gulf. This groundbreaking project showcases the power of next-generation wireless technology in transforming industrial operations.

At the heart of this innovation is HT’s deployment of standalone (SA) 5G architecture, marking a first for the company and promising unparalleled performance for critical port operations. The Rijeka Gateway terminal, set to begin operations in 2025, will leverage this advanced network to support remotely controlled cranes and predominantly electric container handling equipment. This technological leap not only enhances operational efficiency but also significantly reduces the terminal’s environmental footprint.

The project represents a strategic partnership between HT and Rijeka Gateway, a joint venture of APM Terminals and ENNA Group. HT’s selection to provide this managed service on a turnkey basis underscores the telecom giant’s expertise in delivering robust, business-critical communication solutions.

Marijana Bačić, COO for business customers at HT, emphasized the project’s significance: “This project demonstrates Rijeka Gateway’s confidence in our ability to provide a high-availability service for seamless 24/7 port operations. It confirms our strategy in providing business-critical communication through our public mobile network.”

The Rijeka Gateway terminal is poised to become a crucial entry point for container traffic to European markets. With a 50-year concession and a total investment of €380 million, the project is expected to significantly boost the local economy, creating jobs and fostering growth in the region.

Peter Corfitsen, CEO of Rijeka Gateway, highlighted the terminal’s technological advancements: ” he terminal in Rijeka will be the only terminal in this part of Europe with remotely controlled cranes, almost all equipment will be electric, and we are also installing very advanced systems for energy optimization and overall terminal management “

This innovative deployment of 5G technology at Rijeka Gateway underscores the growing importance of advanced wireless networks in industrial settings. As ports worldwide seek to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact, Hrvatski Telekom’s private 5G solution sets a new standard for smart, sustainable port operations.

The project aligns with broader industry trends, as Hrvatski Telekom explores potential structural changes, including the spin-off of its tower infrastructure and merger with its network infrastructure subsidiary. These strategic moves position HT to better deliver managed services like the Rijeka port deal in the future.
