Hamburg Will Run Autonomous Trains with Private Networks

By 2021, as part of the “Digitale S-Bahn Hamburg’ initiative, highly automated trains are expected to operate on a 23-kilometer section of the S-Bahn Line 21. An aspect of the automation is the demonstration of fully driverless shunting of empty trains in an area near Bergedorf station. Furthermore, the project will be one of the first demonstrations of the Future Railway Mobile Communications System (FRMCS) standard, based on 5G, which supports the communication between trains and control centers.
