‘Gear makers unlikely to partner with enterprises directly for 5G captive networks’

MUMBAI: Telecom network equipment vendors such as Ericsson are unlikely to work directly with enterprises that have 5G airwaves but will instead partner with operators to set up private 5G captive networks for enterprises, executives said.

“Our go-to model has been to work with telcos. The telco fronts the enterprise, while Ericsson supports with the equipment, and sometimes managed services too,” Thiaw Seng Ng, Head of Network Evolution, SEA, Oceania and India, Ericsson told reporters.

He was responding to a question on whether the Swedish gear maker will work directly with enterprises that have acquired spectrum from the government for setting up captive networks for enterprises.

Big enterprises with direct access to 5G airwaves will rely less on telcos to build/manage their captive networks. Private 5G networks: Telcos' demand for level playing field absurd and impractical, say tech companies

BIF said that the suggestion that private networks should not be given spectrum in bands which are possible for telcos to use for offering services is also unjustified, as the telcos’ businesses depend on economies of scale, while that of enterprise businesses having private networks does not. The spectrum that is earmarked for private networks needs to be exclusive and distinct from those bands for Public 5G, to avoid needless possibilities of interference between the two networks.
