Vertical: Smart City
Application: Smart parking
Ecosystem: Fujitsu
Private Network: LTE, CBRS
In a significant step towards becoming a smarter, more connected city, Dublin, Ohio has partnered with Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. to implement a Smart Parking pilot application. This innovative project, leveraging CBRS technology, marks a crucial milestone in Dublin’s broader Connected Dublin initiative, aimed at enhancing local business success and reducing carbon emissions through advanced data analytics and real-time information sharing.
The newly deployed system utilizes technology to measure and analyze parking patterns in the city’s busy areas. By making these insights readily available to community leaders and residents, Dublin aims to streamline parking processes, improve access to local businesses, and ultimately contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions by minimizing unnecessary driving time.
Doug McCollough, Chief Information Officer at the City of Dublin, Ohio, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “The Smart Parking application will provide real-time parking lot occupancy to residents and visitors, allowing better customer access to local businesses, and lower drive times. Through technology and infrastructure delivered by Fujitsu, we are exploring new ways to keep our citizens connected.”
Interestingly, the pilot has yielded an unexpected benefit in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The system’s ability to measure and analyze parking data, including the number of cars and duration of visits, has provided invaluable insights into the impacts of quarantine guidelines. This data has proven crucial for both local government decision-making and business strategies during these challenging times.
Greg Manganello, head of the wireless and services business unit at Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc., highlighted the transformative potential of the project: “Through our Smart Cities consulting, integration and deployment expertise, Fujitsu is helping the city of Dublin realize the transformational benefits of IoT. We are committed to co-creating solutions that promote economic development and quality of life for cities across the country.”
This Smart Parking pilot is just the first phase of a more comprehensive, software-defined, 5G-ready digital transformation platform. The complete solution encompasses multi-layer software orchestration and control, physical and edge compute network equipment, IoT applications and devices, and complete lifecycle support services.
