In an era where rapid and reliable communication can mean the difference between life and death, Austria-based critical communications provider Frequentis is taking a significant leap forward. By partnering with Drei Austria and Three Group Solutions, Frequentis is harnessing the power of 5G technology to revolutionize emergency response systems.

First responders, including air traffic controllers, police, firefighters, and rescue services, require unparalleled connectivity to perform their life-saving duties effectively. Traditional networks often falter under the weight of high traffic during emergencies, leading to potentially catastrophic communication breakdowns. With the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and major disasters, the pressure on these services to react swiftly and efficiently has never been greater.

To address these challenges, Drei Austria has implemented a 5G private network at Frequentis’ headquarters in Vienna. This innovative setup combines:

  • A slice of Drei Austria’s public standalone 5G (5G SA) network for outdoor coverage
  • A dedicated private 5G core network at Frequentis’ offices
  • Indoor radio cells for comprehensive indoor coverage

This hybrid approach ensures robust data transmission, regardless of public network load, while maintaining the highest standards of data security.

  • The 5G core network keeps all Frequentis data within company headquarters, meeting stringent security requirements.
  • Enables instant communication, crucial for rapid response in critical situations.
  • Network slicing reserves resources for emergency services, ensuring smooth communication even during peak times.
  • Supports data-intensive applications like real-time video transmission, providing responders with vital visual information.

This custom 5G environment serves as a crucial development and testing ground for Frequentis’ MissionX safety-critical communication solutions. It allows the company to validate application behavior under realistic operational conditions, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in emergency response technology.

Charlotte Rösener, Head of Mission Critical Services at Frequentis, emphasizes the importance of this setup: “The use of a 5G campus network with network slicing on the public 5G network for a test platform is an important prerequisite for the further development of safety-critical applications within the framework of MissionX.”

This implementation is the result of close collaboration between Frequentis, Drei Austria, and Three Group Solutions. Drei Austria provides the technical backbone with their nationwide 5G standalone network, while Three Group Solutions brings expertise in integrating these capabilities for practical applications.

Matthias Baldermann, Chief Technical Officer at Drei, highlights their unique position: “We are the first, and so far the only, option in Austria with a nationwide 5G SA network. It is here, in the sector with the most critical requirements, that our technology reveals its full potential.”
