Europe’s First Private Network at Temelín Nuclear Power Plant

Nuclear Power Plant Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Utilities

Application: MCPTT, AR/VR

Ecosystem:  Vodafone

Private Network: 5G

In a groundbreaking move that marks a significant step forward in the integration of modern technology with critical infrastructure, Vodafone has successfully implemented Europe’s first 5G mobile private network (MPN) at the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant in Czechia. This innovative project, developed in collaboration with the energy giant ČEZ Group, is set to revolutionize communications and operations within one of Europe’s most crucial energy facilities.

The pilot project, which currently covers outdoor areas and specific sections of the plant, is designed to replace traditional walkie-talkie systems with state-of-the-art 5G technology. This upgrade is not just about better call quality; it’s about unlocking the potential for advanced tools and improved operational efficiency.

One of the most exciting prospects is the integration of augmented reality glasses for plant technicians. This technology could dramatically enhance the way maintenance and inspections are conducted, providing real-time data and visual aids to workers as they navigate the complex systems of a nuclear power plant.

In an environment where safety and security are paramount, the private nature of this 5G network offers significant advantages. Violeta Luca, CEO of Vodafone Czechia, emphasizes this point, “By being entirely independent from the public network, our private 5G solution ensures that all user data and infrastructure are securely managed within the power plant’s own systems. This is vital for maintaining the highest standards of safety and reliability.”

This level of data sovereignty and network independence is crucial for critical infrastructure, providing a secure foundation for the digital transformation of the energy sector.

The Temelín project puts Czechia at the forefront of nuclear energy innovation in Europe. Bohdan Zronek, a member of the ČEZ Board of Directors and Director of its Nuclear Division, proudly notes, “We are the first nuclear power plant in Europe to actually test a private 5G network, while other European operators work mostly with 4G.”

This pioneering spirit showcases the commitment to innovation within the Czech energy sector and sets a precedent for other nuclear facilities across the continent.

The implementation of 5G at Temelín is part of a larger trend. Vodafone has already deployed similar networks in other industries, notably at Škoda Auto’s production plant, where it has significantly enhanced automated processes and machine communication. The company’s expansion of private networks to Germany, Italy, and Ireland signals a broader push towards integrating 5G technology across various sectors in Europe.
