Vertical: Railways
Application: AR-powered maintenance, operational technology integration, real-time train communication
Ecosystem: Airspan Networks, Druid Software, Boldyn Networks
Private Network: 5G
A major European railway company has implemented a custom private 5G network to revolutionize its maintenance operations and facility management. The project brings together industry leaders Airspan Networks and Druid Software, with implementation expertise from Boldyn Networks (formerly Smart Mobile Labs). By combining Airspan’s Open RAN-based solutions with Druid’s Raemis 5G Core platform, the railway now enjoys comprehensive, secure connectivity tailored specifically for transportation requirements.
The network spans diverse environments from compact workshops to expansive maintenance facilities, each receiving precisely calibrated coverage. This flexibility enables consistent performance across the entire railway infrastructure, regardless of location size or operational demands.
Among the most impressive applications enabled by this private 5G implementation is augmented reality maintenance support. Technicians now utilize tools like HoloLens to access real-time visual assistance, enhancing repair precision and enabling remote expert collaboration when facing complex issues.
The network’s reliability and minimal latency have proven essential for operational technology integration. Critical railway systems now benefit from continuous monitoring and responsive control mechanisms, substantially improving both operational efficiency and safety protocols.
Perhaps most importantly, the 5G infrastructure facilitates uninterrupted data exchange with trains, whether stationary or in motion. This high-capacity connectivity ensures that vital information flows seamlessly throughout the railway ecosystem, supporting informed decision-making and responsive operations.
“Our collaboration with Airspan and Boldyn Networks on this private 5G deployment showcases the power of 5G to revolutionize rail transport,” said Tadhg Kenny, President for Global Partnerships at Druid Software. “Our Raemis platform is designed for mission-critical environments like rail, delivering the security and scalability needed for seamless operations.”
Henrik Smith-Petersen, CSMO of Airspan Networks, emphasized the importance of specialized connectivity in transportation: “5G private networks are transforming transportation, where mobility, security, and reliability are essential. With Open RAN and dedicated spectrum, we ensure high-performance, interference-free connectivity for mission-critical rail applications. We are proud to collaborate with Boldyn Networks and Druid Software to drive this transformation.”
