Private Network: 5G
The Port of València is setting new standards in maritime operations with the implementation of a sophisticated private 5G network, marking a significant step in its evolution toward becoming a Smart Port. This €6 million initiative, partially funded by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility, represents one of Europe’s most ambitious port digitalization projects.
The network’s architecture is designed to support over 25,000 connected devices, ranging from smartphones and vehicles to surveillance cameras, environmental sensors, and drones. With more than 15 n40 base stations strategically positioned throughout the port, the infrastructure ensures comprehensive coverage across all operational areas.
Technical excellence defines the project’s core design. The network operates on the n40 frequency band (2.3-2.4 GHz), regulated by public authorities, providing a secure and private communication environment. Its Stand-Alone (SA) architecture delivers impressive performance metrics, including a maximum throughput of 10 Gbps and an initial 20 MHz bandwidth, expandable to 40 MHz.
The deployment emphasizes security and reliability through geo-redundant core network clusters and integrated cybersecurity systems. This robust infrastructure supports critical applications like real-time police surveillance through high-resolution video feeds and remote maintenance operations leveraging immersive telepresence and AI technologies.
“5G will allow us to configure the technological future of the Port of València, a future that will provide advanced connectivity for the improvement of innovation and the definitive digital transformation,” said Enrique Belda, director of the Port Authority of València. The project enables sophisticated services including passenger connectivity, digital twinning, intelligent surveillance, collision risk detection, and enhanced stowage planning.
The initiative stands out for its self-provisioning model, granting the port complete autonomy in managing and expanding its network infrastructure. Joan Meseguer Llopis, senior manager of innovation projects at the Valenciaport Foundation, highlights three distinguishing features: the port’s scale, comprehensive 5G implementation, and exclusive radio spectrum utilization.
Looking ahead, the Port of València plans to complete the network deployment and implement additional enhancements by 2027. This strategic investment positions the port at the forefront of maritime innovation, demonstrating how advanced connectivity can revolutionize port operations and security while establishing a model for ports worldwide.
