Brownsville’s Smart City Powers the Future with Private 5G

Smart city Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Smart City

Application: IoT, smart parks, enhanced public safety

Ecosystem:  NTT Data

Private Network: 5G

Brownsville, Texas is taking a bold step into the future with a smart city initiative powered by private 5G technology. The city has partnered with global IT services leader NTT DATA to deploy an advanced network infrastructure and smart solutions aimed at enhancing public services, safety, and sustainability.

At the heart of this transformation is a private 5G network that will provide seamless, high-speed connectivity across Brownsville. This wireless backbone will support a vast array of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and sensors, collecting real-time data from throughout the city. NTT DATA’s Smart Solutions platform will harness this data using artificial intelligence and machine learning to generate actionable insights for city officials.

The initial phase of the project focuses on Brownsville’s downtown core, including four public parks, the Department of Public Works yard, and the airport. Key use cases include smart infrastructure management, enhanced public safety, and the creation of a truly connected city environment. For instance, the private network will enable smart park strategies to monitor occupancy levels, manage crowds, and improve overall safety for residents and visitors.

This initiative comes at a pivotal time for Brownsville. The city is experiencing significant growth, driven by factors such as the nearby SpaceX Starbase complex, the Texas LNG export facility, and the deep-water Port of Brownsville. By investing in cutting-edge digital infrastructure, Brownsville aims to effectively manage this growth while positioning itself as an emerging technology hub.

Mayor John Cowen, Jr. emphasized the transformative potential of this project, stating, “We’re seeking to reinvent human-to-digital interactions in ways that deliver amazing citizen services and an outstanding quality of life.” This sentiment is echoed by city officials who see the private 5G network as essential for attracting new opportunities and innovations to Brownsville.

One of the key advantages of the private 5G approach is its cost-effectiveness and scalability. By owning and operating its own network, Brownsville can avoid the data charges typically associated with traditional wireless carriers. Moreover, the network can be easily expanded and adapted to meet future demands and use cases as the city continues to evolve.

NTT DATA’s expertise in smart city deployments, showcased in projects like Las Vegas and European airports, brings a wealth of experience to Brownsville. Eric Clark, CEO of NTT DATA North America, highlighted the game-changing potential of combining predictive AI, real-time analytics, P5G, and edge devices for communities seeking digital transformation.
