Bridging the Digital Divide: Chippewa Cree Tribe Gets Fiber and Wireless Broadband

High-speed internet to tribal lands Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Tribal

Application: Enhanced connectivity

Ecosystem:  Spy Ego

Private Network: LTE/5G, EBS

Spy Ego Media has joined forces with the Chippewa Cree Energy Corporation to implement next-generation broadband capabilities throughout the reservation. This groundbreaking initiative is made possible by a Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program (TBCP) grant award. The TBCP is a $3 billion program established under President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Consolidated Appropriations Act. Its primary goal is to support Tribal governments in bringing high-speed Internet to Tribal lands.

For the 3,400+ Chippewa Cree Tribal members living within the reservation boundaries, access to high-speed internet has been a long-awaited dream. But thanks to this partnership, that dream is becoming a reality.

“The Tribal broadband grant will enhance economic development, small business capabilities and will also help with the education of our youth and young adults,” said Harlan Baker, Chairman of the Chippewa Cree Tribe.

Using the TBCP grant funds, SEMCOMM will build an integrated network combining nearly 100 miles of fiber optic cables with wireless 4G, 5G, and 2.5 GHz EBS spectrum allocated specifically for tribal lands. This state-of-the-art infrastructure will be handed over to CCEC for ongoing management and service delivery to Tribal members.
