Vertical: Smart City
Application: Enhanced coverage, IoT, HD-video
Ecosystem: Boldyn Networks
Private Network: 5G
Boldyn Networks, a UK-headquartered neutral host provider, has recently inked a deal with Roma Capitale, the municipal government of Rome, to deploy advanced 5G and Wi-Fi infrastructure across the Lazio region. The initiative, known as the Roma5G project, aims to transform Rome into one of Europe’s most advanced smart cities. The comprehensive project encompasses various components, including the installation of 5G networks in metro lines, the deployment of IoT sensors for environmental monitoring, and the implementation of smart city solutions for traffic management.
The Roma5G project is set to revolutionize the city’s connectivity landscape by delivering a neutral host 5G network to all of Rome’s major metro lines, covering 83 stations and 68 kilometers of tunnels. The infrastructure will consist of 2,200 small cells, 850 public Wi-Fi access points, 1,800 IoT sensors, and 2,000 5G CCTV cameras. This extensive network will support full connectivity in Rome’s busiest locations, enhance public safety, and enable various smart services.
The infrastructure, designed to seamlessly integrate with the city’s aesthetics, includes a free city-wide Wi-Fi network with 850 points of presence in popular areas, catering to the needs of both residents and visitors.
“The partnership with Boldyn Networks will facilitate the creation of a cutting-edge technological network, integrating 5G and Wi-Fi to deliver advanced digital services. Moreover, this initiative will contribute to reducing electromagnetic emissions, promoting a neutral technology accessible to all mobile operators,” said Roberto Gualtieri, City Mayor.
Boldyn Networks, known for its expertise in neutral hosting, views the Roma5G project as a pivotal opportunity to collaborate with various industry players and expand its presence in Europe. The company, which recently acquired private network specialist Edzcom, has successfully implemented similar shared network systems in global cities such as New York, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Hong Kong.
“We are honoured to bring Boldyn Network’s neutral host expertise to this important and cutting-edge project, implementing Roma Capitale’s vision for a leading smart city,” said Andrew McGrath, group chief commercial officer at Boldyn Networks.
The work will be completed in time for the Catholic Jubilee 2025 celebrations when Rome expects to welcome over 30 million visitors.
