Tacoma Tideflats Gets Boost with New Private 5G Network

Port Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Ports

Application: Expanded coverage, data sharing, supply chain visibility

Ecosystem:  5G Open Innovation Lab, Edge Cluster

Private Network: 5G

A private 5G network was launched in the Tacoma (Washington) Tideflats on Monday as part of a pilot project to showcase the potential of 5G innovation. The network was developed through a collaboration between the 5G Open Innovation Lab, Edge Cluster, Washington Maritime Blue, the City of Tacoma, and other partners. It currently supports five enterprises in the area – Tote Maritime Alaska, Silverback Marine, Trident Seafoods, SAFE Boats International, and Motive Power Marine.

The network leverages existing infrastructure like utility poles to optimize cost and effort. It provides initial coverage for the five clients on the East Blair Peninsula where their operations are located. The network is extensible and can be extended to cover more clients across the Tideflats in the future.

The project received funding from the Washington Department of Commerce’s Evergreen Manufacturing Growth Grant. It aims to foster a technology platform to support initiatives from a 2022 feasibility study, including improving supply chain visibility, enhancing infrastructure, prioritizing safety, and focusing on health.

Partners highlighted the network’s potential to improve data sharing and innovation in maritime industries in the Tideflats and position the region as a prime location for tech development and living wage jobs. The Port of Tacoma Commissioner welcomed the innovation and looks forward to hearing outcomes from the group of port tenants.

The 5G Open Innovation Lab is an ecosystem bringing together startups, enterprises, tech platforms, and investors to collaborate on developing new 5G and edge computing solutions. In four years, it has attracted over 100 startups who have raised almost $2.1 billion in funding.
