Private Network: 5G

Norway’s 375-year-old postal service is embracing the latest in wireless technology at its new logistics terminal outside of Oslo. Posten has recruited local telecom operator Telia Norway to deploy a private 5G network at its Oslo Logistikkpark Drøbak facility, looking to enhance security, flexibility, and performance in its operations.

The high-speed, low-latency private network will connect all operational systems and devices both inside and outside the terminal building. Posten highlighted “optimal performance and enhanced security” as key expected benefits, particularly important during the busy holiday delivery season. The network launch comes after Telia was selected as Posten’s technology partner in late 2021.

In statements, Posten officials emphasized the need for always-on connectivity and zero downtime for the thousands of systems running warehouse logistics operations. The custom-built 5G network aims to deliver security and reliability beyond what Wi-Fi or public networks can provide.

“It is exciting to test and use the possibilities that 5G technology has to offer. When we were going to build a new terminal, we wanted to see if it was possible to base all data communication on the mobile network. It provides secure communication for all our devices – both inside and outside the terminal,” said Arne Erik Berntzen, Posten CIO.

Two fiber optic lines and a backup satellite link further bolster connectivity, underscoring Posten’s commitment to running a smooth, smart, and secure facility. Telia lauded the postal service for pushing boundaries and taking advantage of cutting-edge infrastructure. With online shopping booming and delivery demands intensifying every year, Posten’s tight embrace of private 5G could signal a new era for logistics tech.
