Vertical: Airports
Application: Enhanced coverage and capacity
Ecosystem: Boingo
Private Network: LTE, CBRS
Boingo Wireless has made a groundbreaking move in airport connectivity by successfully deploying the first known private LTE network using Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) at Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL). This innovative deployment marks a significant milestone in the wireless industry’s journey and improved connectivity in high-traffic areas.
Key Highlights:
- First CBRS deployment at a major U.S. airport
- Part of a commercial trial using the 3.5 GHz CBRS band
- Operates as a private LTE solution for streamlined airport operations
- Potential to expand wireless coverage and capacity at DAL
Dr. Derek Peterson, Boingo’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of this deployment: “Boingo’s technical demonstration of CBRS at DAL is a pivotal step forward for the wireless industry as the technology will help accommodate connectivity in the 5G era.”
Boingo received Special Temporary Authority (STA) from the FCC for the trial.
This successful deployment at DAL paves the way for wider adoption of CBRS technology in airports and other large public venues. As the industry moves towards 5G, shared spectrum solutions like CBRS will play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for high-speed, reliable connectivity in crowded spaces.
Mark Duebner, Director of Aviation at Dallas Love Field, expressed excitement about the airport’s role in this innovative project: “DAL is proud to be part of this trailblazing achievement and lead the airport industry into the future of wireless innovation.”
