Innovation at The Open: Private 5G and Digital Twins Transform Golf’s Oldest Major

Golf Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Sports, Venue

Application: Broadcasting

Ecosystem:  NTT Data

Private Network: 5G

The 152nd edition of The Open Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland is set to showcase a technological revolution in golf, thanks to a partnership between NTT DATA and The R&A. This collaboration is bringing innovations to one of golf’s most prestigious events, enhancing fan experiences both on and off the course.

At the heart of this digital transformation is NTT DATA’s deployment of a private 5G network – a first for The Open. This high-speed, low-latency network serves as the foundation for a suite of advanced technologies that promise to bring fans closer to the action than ever before.

One of the most exciting applications is the digital twin technology powering NTT DATA’s ShotView. This system creates an incredibly accurate virtual representation of the golf course, allowing fans to experience the tournament from a player’s perspective. ShotView can track ball positions with remarkable precision, offering unprecedented insights into professional gameplay strategies and decision-making.

The NTT DATA Wall, a massive 20-meter wide LED screen in the spectators’ village, serves as the centerpiece for data visualization. Tthis display brings real-time data insights and ball-tracking statistics to life with hyper-realistic visuals. The wall not only informs but captivates, rendering detailed scenes complete with accurate lighting, shadows, and textures.

Adding a futuristic touch to fan interaction is Lottie, an AI-powered ‘digital human’. This advanced avatar leverages generative AI to provide real-time insights, course updates, and deep knowledge of golf rules and history. Lottie represents a new frontier in spectator engagement, blending education and entertainment through a conversational interface.

Mona Charif, Global CMO at NTT DATA, emphasizes the transformative potential of these technologies: “From 5G to digital analytics, we’re enabling deeper, more dynamic insights into every aspect of the game.”

Steve Otto, CTO at The R&A, highlights the long-term impact of this partnership: “Their insights and innovative application of technology, particularly the use of data, not only makes golf more accessible and appealing but also ensures The Open is poised to thrive for many years to come.”
