Hughes Opens New Facility for Private 5G and Satellite Tech Manufacturing

Private 5G and Satellite Tech Manufacturing Facility Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Manufacturing

Application: Testing

Private Network: 5G

Hughes Network Systems, a subsidiary of EchoStar, has opened an innovative new manufacturing facility in Germantown, Maryland called the Hughes Manufacturing Facility (EXM). This cutting-edge 140,000 square foot center will produce Hughes’ satellite modems, terminals, and other hardware that powers networks for consumers, enterprises, and government agencies around the world.

But the EXM isn’t just a factory – it will also serve as an incubation hub for developing private 5G network solutions. Hughes plans to use the facility as a testbed for new private 5G services tailored for enterprise and military use cases. This is a major strategic move as private 5G networks start going mainstream for businesses looking for enhanced security, reliability, and performance.

The facility has around 400 engineers, technicians, and manufacturing staff, augmented by advanced robotics for streamlined production. A unique aspect is its location on a community college campus, allowing Hughes to foster local technical talent through training initiatives, internships, and mentorships with students.

“The opening of EXM solidifies our dedication to technological innovation, engineering expertise, and fostering the next generation of industry leaders. The products imagined, designed, and fabricated in this building further advance our mission of connecting everyone, everywhere,” said Hamid Akhavan, President and CEO, EchoStar.

For the U.S. Department of Defense, the EXM will provide critical onshore manufacturing capabilities to evaluate Hughes’ secure 5G networking applications for military requirements. As a longtime satellite tech provider for defense agencies, Hughes can now develop sovereign private 5G solutions tailored for the DoD’s needs.
